A plum of Saharan dust has made its way into North Texas. This will make the skies hazy, especially during the morning and evening hours. More plumes are coming.

The National Weather Service reports a high-pressure system in northern Gulf of Mexico is preventing Saharan dust from blowing into Texas, at least until Wednesday.

It helps to create some picturesque sunrises and sunsets in our Central Texas sky. But it also can make breathing difficult for some people.

It's that time of the year when Saharan Dust from the Saharan desert in Africa makes its way across the pond. We generally see this dust make the 5,000-7,000-mile trek across the Atlantic Ocean during the late spring, summer and early autumn. We could see the first plume of the season as early as Monday of next week.

From June through August, high winds pick up dust from the Sahara Desert and can carry it westward more than 5,000 miles to the Texas Gulf Coast.
